Can I feed my fish live maggots?

I have large freshwater fish in an aquarium - can I feed them live maggots or would it be dangerous (parasites, diseases etc.)?

You should be fine, and actually it would be very good for the fish. Maggots are very high in protein so it would be very good for a carnivorous fish. As far as them transferring parasites to your tank, I highly doubt it, no more of a chance of that happening than earth worms, crickets, or any other live food. I would advise someone to feed there fish maggots way before advising to feed them feeders fish. I have heard of some people actually harvesting their own maggots for this exact purpose, sure it is a very stinky process, but it is free food, you'd just have to find somewhere to put the meat so not to stink stink up your house, or your neighbors for that matter. I also know many people that raise their own earth worms in old bath tubs for their fish, same idea, just not as smelly, also the worms are better for larger fish, if you have small fish the maggots would work very well. A lot of people are grossed out by maggots, but all they are is insect larve (fly larve to be exact), and in the wild, insects and insect larve are a big part of a lot of fishes diet. In my profession I deal with maggots every day, and they really are not that gross, what they feed on is sometimes, but they are just doing their job. Also maggots have saved peoples life, people that have had open wounds and been stuck away from medical attention will get maggots in the wound. It is a good thing because the maggots will only eat the dead flesh and leave all the live flesh, so they actually keep the wound clean and can save the person fron gang green and blood poisoning till they are able to reach medical attention for the wound. Sorry about rambling on, but maggots just get a bad rap. You should be fine to feed them to your fish though.
