Will a Betta fish attack a catfish?

Ok, I have a small 1 gallon tank. The guy at the pet store said I could get a betta or a couple of guppies. So I got some guppies and a catfish. Well my guppies just kept dying and I was told that they are a difficult fish to take care of. So I wanted to get a betta. But the problem is, is that I still have my catfish. I don't want to get a betta that will kill him, but I want another fish. If I get a betta will it kill my albino catfish?
He is a little albino Cory catfish and he is about an inch to an inch and a half. But he mostly stays at the bottom unless it's food time.

The betta will most likely not be hostile to the catfish. Guppies are incredibly easy to take care of, so you must have done something wrong, I'm guessing overstocking the tank, and too quickly. If you want several fish, get a larger tank, otherwise limit yourself to 1 or 2. And even with a larger tank, only introduce a few fish at a time over several weeks, make sure to change out about 10% of the water weekly, and introduce plants if they don't get in the way. These measures should help to ensure that your nitrogen cycle doesn't get to far out of whack.

And always make sure to dechlorinate water before adding to the tank, if you don't have chemical dechlorinators, age it 3 days.
